Sanda Kickboxing Vs Muay Thai Kickboxing

What is Sanda Kickboxing?

Sanda Kickboxing is a style of kickboxing that originates from China. It was born from the need to modernize the traditional combat methods of China, what we call Kung Fu in the west. The people who invented this style of combat took the traditional wrestling found across the Chinese martial systems and incorporated it with modern kickboxing techniques. When this style was initially created it focused more on kicking and wrestling techniques but as it has grown and developed over the last fifty years Sanda Kickboxing has become a more well rounded style by incorporating more western boxing and wrestling techniques. It is a great martial art for those looking to learn how to fight at striking and wrestling ranges and teaches you how to seamlessly combine the two disciplines

What is Muay Thai Kickboxing?

Muay Thai Kickboxing was born from taking elements from an older form of traditional Thai boxing called Muay Boran and incorporating modern boxing techniques. Known as the style with 8 limbs as it involves boxing, kicking, knees and elbows. This style of kickboxing also involves a lot of clinch work where knees and elbows are utilized and some sweeps and kick catches. Muay Thai is a complete striking art, any Muay Thai master will be able to strike at any range.

What is the difference between Sanda Kickboxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing?

The main difference between Muay Thai and Sanda Kickboxing is the wrestling and takedowns found in Sanda Kickboxing and wrestling changes everything. Because you can’t wrestle in Muay Thai the range is a lot closer this is why Thai fighters are so proficient at clinch fighting, where they can utilise elbows and knees. While if a Sanda Kickboxing fighter stood at a Muay Thai fighter's range they would not have time to react to takedowns changing the range and pace of the fight, making a Sanda fight and range more similar to an MMA match.  This creates two unique fighting styles both bringing their own strengths and weaknesses!

Which style should you train?

Well it depends what you want to get good at. Do you want to be a close range fighter that can use a diverse range of striking and clinch techniques? Then Muay Thai is the sport for you. If you are looking for a style that can seamlessly transition between striking and wrestling? Then Sanda Kickboxing is what you need! (We also do clinch, knees and elbows in self-defence). Ultimately the only way to know which style suits you best is to try them out and see which one you enjoy the most!
