HOW WE TEACH CHILDREN

INTRODUCTION

Acquiring new skills varies greatly between children and adults, and nowhere is this more evident than in the realm of sports and martial arts. At Sanda Kickboxing Academy, we recognize that children learn in a different compared to adults. Understanding these differences is very important in creating classes that not only cater to their developmental needs but also make the learning experience engaging and enjoyable. In this article, we'll explore some of the unique aspects of children's learning styles and how our children’s classes are designed to foster the fundamental skills needed for this fast paced sport.

THE COGNITIVE AND PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES

Children's brains are wired differently from adults, children have heightened neuroplasticity and a greater capacity for absorbing new information. However, their attention spans are generally shorter, and they learn best through play and interaction, it is also important to recognise that they are still developing their motor skills and coordination and that each child will develop in their own time (see “when should my child start Martial Arts” for more information on this subject). In our children’s classes, we recognize the importance of balancing playful elements into the training sessions with the learning of Martial techniques and skills. Our coaches utilize a variety of games and activities that not only teach fundamental Martial Arts skills but also keep the children actively engaged, ensuring that learning is an enjoyable process.

CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Children thrive in environments that foster positivity and encouragement. Our kickboxing club prioritizes creating a safe and supportive atmosphere where children feel comfortable taking risks and challenging themselves. Positive reinforcement is a key element of our teaching philosophy, as we believe that celebrating small victories builds confidence and motivates children to persist in their learning journey. Our classes are structured to balance discipline with positive coaching so that a child can enjoy the learning process.

AGE-APPROPRIATE PROGRESSION

We recognize that children of different ages learn in different ways, our children’s classes are designed with age-appropriate progressions. Younger children focus on building basic motor skills, coordination, and balance, while older kids delve deeper into refining techniques and developing strategic thinking. The curriculum evolves with the children, this means we have different expectations for how a child and develops depending on their age but we also take into account the individual as we realise children develop and different times in life. This approach not only enhances their martial arts abilities but also hopefully helps nurtures a lifelong enjoyment for fitness and martial arts.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, understanding the distinct ways in which children learn is pivotal in designing effective and enjoyable Martial arts classes. At Sanda Kickboxing Academy, we celebrate the individuality of each child and tailor our classes to meet their cognitive and physical needs. By creating a positive and engaging learning environment, incorporating playful techniques, and adapting our curriculum to different age groups, we empower children to develop fundamental martial skills while also hopefully developing the foundation for a lifelong passion for sport and fitness.
